Travel eSIM guides: buying, setup and fixing an eSIM that will not connect

Most eSIM questions fall into three buckets: which plan to buy, how to install it without breaking your normal line, and what to do when the thing shows no signal at the airport. This hub answers all three in plain English, then points you to the deeper guides.

What an eSIM actually is (and what it is not)

An eSIM is a SIM card built into your phone's hardware. Instead of a plastic chip, you download a profile — usually by scanning a QR code — and your phone connects to local networks at the destination automatically, on 4G and, where available, 5G.

Two things to get straight before you buy:

• It is data only. A VoaSim eSIM gives you internet, not a new phone number and not traditional voice calls. WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Zoom, maps and rideshare apps all run over data, so in practice you lose very little.
• Your real SIM stays in the phone. Your home number keeps working for SMS codes and WhatsApp. You just turn off your carrier's data roaming so it cannot bill you.

You need a compatible handset: iPhone XR or newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and most phones released from 2020 on. Universal test: dial *#06#. If an EID appears, your phone supports eSIM. Carrier-locked phones must be unlocked first.

Buying and installing: the order that avoids problems

The single most common mistake is installing the eSIM at the destination, on hotel Wi-Fi, in a hurry. Do it at home instead.

1. Check the phone. Dial *#06#, confirm the EID, confirm it is unlocked.
2. Buy before you fly. The QR code arrives by email within minutes. If you left a number at checkout, you also get a WhatsApp heads-up.
3. Install at home, keep it off. Scan the QR while you still have solid Wi-Fi. Label the line something obvious like "Travel". On Android, do not switch the eSIM's data on before the trip.
4. On landing: turn off your home carrier's data roaming, then switch the eSIM line on and set it as the data line.

When the eSIM shows no signal

Almost every "my eSIM is not working" case comes down to a handful of settings, not a broken profile. Work through these in order:

• Airplane mode on for 15 seconds, then off. This forces a fresh network search.
• Confirm the travel line is enabled and selected for mobile data, not just present in the list.
• Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line — the travel profile is technically roaming on local networks. Keep your home line's roaming off.
• Set network selection to automatic; if it still fails, pick a local carrier manually.
• Restart the phone. Then check that your APN was not overwritten by an old profile.

Europe, multi-country trips and the edge cases

If your trip crosses borders, a regional plan beats buying one eSIM per country. The Europe plan covers 50 countries with a single eSIM, including Switzerland, the UK, Turkey, Norway and Iceland — so a London–Paris–Istanbul route needs one purchase, not three.

Coverage overall reaches 170 destinations across every continent. Two honest limits worth knowing before you buy:

• Island Caribbean is not covered right now — Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica, Bahamas, Aruba, Curaçao and similar. Puerto Rico does work, since it runs on US networks.
• Cruises: the eSIM connects on land, at ports. It does not work at sea, where only the ship's satellite service exists.

eSIM vs local SIM vs carrier roaming

No single option wins for everyone. Here is the honest split:

Pick a local SIM if you need a local number for deliveries or a long stay. Pick carrier roaming for a two-day trip where a bundled allowance already exists in your plan — check the current rate in your carrier's app, since it changes by country.
