One eSIM for a multi-country trip: how it works (Europe and beyond)

Multi-country trips used to mean a new SIM in every airport. With an eSIM, one QR code can follow you from Lisbon to Istanbul, or from Mexico City to Santiago, with no swapping and no shop queues.

This guide explains exactly how a multi-country eSIM works, what to check before you buy, and how VoaSim prices it — one price per duration, the same for every destination.

How one eSIM covers several countries

A travel eSIM is a digital profile installed on your phone. Instead of being tied to one carrier, it connects automatically to partner networks in each country you enter, on 4G and, where available, 5G.

When you cross a border, you do nothing. The phone searches, finds a local network and reconnects, usually within a few minutes of landing or leaving the train station. You do not reinstall the QR code and you do not buy a second plan.

Two things decide whether this works for your itinerary:

Price by trip length, not by border

Before you fly: the five-step checklist

1. Check the phone. iPhone XR or newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and most phones launched from 2020. Universal test: dial *#06# — if an EID appears, the phone supports eSIM. Carrier-locked phones must be unlocked first.
2. Check every country on the route. Island Caribbean destinations (Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica, Bahamas, Aruba, Curaçao) are not covered today. Puerto Rico works on US networks.
3. Buy by total trip length. Round up, never down — the plan must outlast the last flight home.
4. Install at home. The QR code arrives by email within minutes. Follow the iPhone or Android guide in our guides, then leave the eSIM line switched off.
5. Land, then switch on. Turn the eSIM data on at the destination and turn off your home carrier's roaming.

Validity counts from the first connection to a network abroad, not from purchase. On Android especially, do not enable the eSIM's data before the trip.

When another option may suit you better

Being fair about it: a multi-country eSIM is not always the right tool.

• You barely use data. Brands selling by the gigabyte — Airalo, Nomad, Ubigi, Saily and similar apps — can be cheaper if you only need maps and messages. Check the cap and the expiry date in each app.
• Your route includes island Caribbean stops. VoaSim has no coverage there right now. A local option or your carrier is the answer.
• You need a local phone number. VoaSim is data only — no number and no traditional voice calls. WhatsApp, app calls and maps run over data. For bank SMS in a local format, a local physical SIM is the fit, though it usually means passport registration and swapping your SIM out.
• You must rely on tethering. Hotspot availability depends on the plan; ask support before you count on it.
• Cruises. An eSIM works on land at ports, not at sea.

If the eSIM will not connect in a new country

Border crossings are the moment most people panic. Work through this order before contacting anyone:

1. Toggle airplane mode on for 15 seconds, then off.
2. Confirm the VoaSim line is selected for mobile data, and that your home carrier's roaming is off.
3. Check that data roaming is enabled on the eSIM line — it needs it to reach partner networks.
4. Switch network selection to automatic, then, if nothing appears, pick a network manually from the list.
5. Restart the phone. This clears most stuck registrations after a border.
6. Check APN settings against the install guide.
