eSIM QR code expired or already used: what to do
Key facts
- An eSIM QR code installs one profile, one time, so an "already used" error usually means it was scanned before.
- Dial *#06# to confirm your phone has an EID, and make sure the handset is carrier-unlocked before troubleshooting further.
- VoaSim plan days start at the eSIM's first connection at the destination, so installing early at home costs nothing.
- The free eSIM Rescue tool at voasim.com/sos diagnoses eSIMs of any brand with no signal.
- VoaSim charges one flat price per duration for 170 destinations, from USD 18.90 for 5 days to USD 106.90 for 60 days.
Want us to confirm it for your case?
"This code is no longer valid" or "eSIM cannot be added" is one of the most common travel-day scares. In almost every case, the QR code was already scanned on that phone or another one, and a QR code only installs one profile, one time.
Here is how to check what actually happened, in order, and what VoaSim does when a code will not install.
Why an eSIM QR code stops working
There are only a few real causes, and they are easy to tell apart:
- Already used. The profile was downloaded once. A second scan on the same or a different phone will be rejected.
- Deleted profile. If you removed the eSIM line from your phone, the profile is gone and the same QR will not bring it back.
- Wrong phone. You scanned it on a device without eSIM support, or on a carrier-locked handset.
- Bad scan conditions. Low screen brightness, a cropped screenshot, or no Wi-Fi during installation.
- Genuine expiry window. Some providers set a download deadline in their terms. Check your order email.
Note the difference between installing and using. With VoaSim, your plan days only start counting at the eSIM's first connection to a network at the destination, so installing early at home costs you nothing. See the guides hub for the full install walkthrough.
The 6 checks, in order
- Look in Settings first. On iPhone: Settings > Cellular. On Android: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. If the line is already there, the QR did its job and you do not need it again.
- Confirm the phone supports eSIM. Dial *#06#. If an EID appears, you are fine. iPhone XR or newer, Galaxy S20 or newer, Pixel 3 or newer, and most phones from 2020 on.
- Confirm the phone is carrier-unlocked. A locked handset refuses foreign profiles.
- Get on stable Wi-Fi. Profile download needs a working internet connection.
- Open the original email, not a screenshot. Raise brightness, or use the manual SM-DP+ address and activation code included with your order instead of the camera.
- Still stuck? Ask for a reissue. Write to hola@voasim.com or use the on-site chat.
Skipping steps is what turns a two-minute fix into an airport panic.
Use the free eSIM Rescue tool
VoaSim runs a free diagnostic tool at voasim.com/sos. It works for an eSIM of any brand, not only ours, and it walks you through the settings that most often cause a dead profile: data roaming switched off on the travel line, the wrong line set for cellular data, APN issues, or airplane mode left on.
Use it when the profile installed but shows no signal, and use it when the QR itself refuses to install. It costs nothing and there is no account to create.
If the tool does not solve it, human support takes over by email at hola@voasim.com or through the chat on the site. VoaSim's rule is simple: if the eSIM will not connect and support cannot fix it, you get a 100% refund. More on how we handle that at voasim.com/trust.
How to avoid an expired or used QR next time
Three habits prevent almost every QR problem:
- Install before you fly. Do it at home, on Wi-Fi, with time to ask questions. VoaSim sends the QR code by email within minutes of purchase.
- Do not delete the profile. Keep the line installed and simply switch it off until you land. On Android, do not turn the eSIM's data on before the trip, or the clock may start early.
- Save the email. Archive it in a folder you can find offline, and screenshot the manual activation details as a backup.
Your physical SIM and your phone number stay active the whole time, so WhatsApp keeps working on your usual number. Just turn off your home carrier's data roaming so it does not bill you in the background. Compare that with carrier roaming if you are still deciding.
What a replacement eSIM costs with VoaSim
If you need a fresh eSIM entirely, the price is the same for every destination among our 170 destinations, and the data is truly unlimited: no cap, no throttling, no hidden fair-use clause.
| Duration | Price | Per day |
|---|---|---|
| 5 days | USD 18.90 | USD 3.78 |
| 7 days | USD 23.90 | USD 3.41 |
| 10 days | USD 30.90 | USD 3.09 |
| 15 days | USD 42.90 | USD 2.86 |
| 30 days | USD 61.90 | USD 2.06 |
| 60 days | USD 106.90 | USD 1.78 |
Trips of 1 to 4 days pay the 5-day package, and the maximum is 90 days per eSIM. A second eSIM in the same order gets 10% extra off. Payment is by international credit or debit card in USD through Stripe, with an invoice by email. Check your exact price at the simulator.
When another provider may suit you better
Being fair about it: if your trip is short and light on data, a per-GB eSIM from a brand like Airalo, Nomad or Ubigi, bought in their app, can come out cheaper than any unlimited plan. Check their current caps, validity and tethering terms on their own sites.
If you must keep receiving SMS codes on a local number, a local physical SIM is still the only way, though it means finding a shop, registering with your passport and taking your own SIM out of the phone.
VoaSim makes sense when you want one flat price, unlimited data and no meter running in the background. One caveat worth repeating: there is no coverage in the island Caribbean right now (Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica, Bahamas, Aruba, Curaçao). Puerto Rico works on US networks. See the comparison page before you buy.
