What dual SIM really means on your phone
Dual SIM is your phone running two mobile lines in parallel. On travel phones the common combo is one physical SIM (your home carrier) plus one eSIM (a digital profile you install with a QR code).
Each line has its own switches. You choose which line makes calls, which sends SMS, and — the important one — which line uses mobile data. That last setting is what decides whether you pay roaming or use your travel eSIM.

The setup, step by step

- Label the lines: name one "Home" and the other "VoaSim" so you never mix them up.
- Keep calls and SMS on your home line. Do not set the travel eSIM as the default voice line.
- Turn the eSIM line off until you land. On Android, make sure its data is not switched on before the trip.
- On landing: turn the eSIM line on, set Mobile Data to VoaSim, and switch Data Roaming ON for the eSIM line (that is normal — it is how the eSIM connects to local networks).
- Turn off data roaming on your home SIM. This is the step that prevents surprise charges.

Why validity starts on arrival, not on purchase

Does your phone support dual SIM with eSIM?

As a rule of thumb, eSIM works on iPhone XR or newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and most phones released from 2020 on. Two caveats:
- Carrier-locked phones must be unlocked first. Ask your carrier before you travel — it can take a day or two.
- US iPhone 14 and later have no physical SIM tray. On those, "dual SIM" means two eSIM profiles: your carrier eSIM plus the VoaSim one. The setup logic is identical.
VoaSim does not sell physical SIM cards. If your phone has no EID, a local SIM shop at the destination is the better route — though that means passport registration in most countries and taking your own SIM out of the phone.
