eSIM not working on Samsung Galaxy: settings to check in order

VoaSim team · Updated 2026-09-25
Traveler checking SIM manager settings on a Samsung Galaxy to fix an eSIM not working abroad
Straight answer: If your eSIM is not working on a Samsung Galaxy, check four things in order: the eSIM line is switched on, data roaming is enabled for that line, the eSIM is set as the mobile data SIM, and network mode allows 4G/5G. If it still has no signal, VoaSim's free eSIM Rescue tool at voasim.com/sos diagnoses any brand of eSIM.

Key facts

  • On Samsung, the top three fixes are: eSIM line on, data roaming on for that line, and the eSIM selected as the mobile data SIM.
  • Dial *#06# — an EID in the result means the phone supports eSIM; a carrier-locked phone still needs unlocking.
  • VoaSim plan days start at the first connection at the destination, so keep the eSIM line off until you land.
  • The free eSIM Rescue tool at voasim.com/sos diagnoses a no-signal eSIM from any brand, not just VoaSim.
  • If the eSIM will not connect and support cannot fix it, VoaSim refunds 100%; plans run from USD 18.90 for 5 days to USD 106.90 for 60 days.

Most "eSIM not working" cases on Samsung are not a broken eSIM. They are one toggle left in the wrong position. Galaxy phones handle two lines at once, so the phone has to be told which line carries data and whether that line may roam.

Work through the checks below in the order they appear. Each one takes seconds, and the first three solve the large majority of no-signal cases at the destination.

Check 1: is the eSIM line actually switched on?

On a Galaxy, an installed eSIM can sit in the list as a disabled line. Go to Settings > Connections > SIM manager and confirm the eSIM appears and its toggle is on.

One note on timing that catches Android users out: with VoaSim, the plan's days start counting at the eSIM's first connection to a network at the destination. So install at home, but keep the eSIM line off until you land. If you turned data on early, the days may already be running — that is not a fault, it is the clock. See the full setup guides before your next trip.

Check 2: data roaming for the eSIM line

This is the single most common cause. A travel eSIM connects to a local partner network abroad, and Android treats that as roaming. With roaming off for that line, you get bars and no internet — or no bars at all.

Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Data roaming and switch it on. On dual-SIM Galaxy phones you must pick the line first: turn roaming on for the eSIM and, just as importantly, turn off data roaming on your home carrier's physical SIM so it cannot bill you.

Your physical SIM and your phone number keep working normally. Calls and SMS on your number stay where they are, and WhatsApp stays tied to that number while it runs over the eSIM's data. VoaSim eSIMs are data only: no new phone number, no traditional voice line. Maps, app calls and messaging all work over data.

Check 3: which SIM carries mobile data

A Galaxy lets you keep two lines active but only one of them carries mobile data. If the phone still points at your home SIM, the eSIM has nothing to do.

Open Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Preferred SIM > Mobile data and select the eSIM. While you are there, disable the toggle that allows switching data between SIMs automatically — it can silently hand data back to your home carrier and trigger roaming charges.

Then test with the phone off Wi-Fi. Turn Wi-Fi off completely and load a page. Plenty of "it's not working" reports are really a phone quietly sitting on hotel Wi-Fi while the eSIM was never tested at all.

If a page loads with Wi-Fi off, you are connected and the eSIM is doing its job. VoaSim data is truly unlimited — no cap, no throttling, no hidden fair-use clause — so slow speeds are a network issue, not a quota.

Check 4: network mode, airplane mode and manual search

If the three checks above are correct and there is still no service, work down this list:

  1. Airplane mode on for 15 seconds, then off. This forces a fresh network attach and fixes many landings.
  2. Restart the phone. Do it once; repeat restarts rarely help.
  3. Network mode: Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network mode. Choose the option that includes 4G/LTE (and 5G if listed). Locking the phone to 3G-only or 2G-only can leave it stranded.
  4. Manual network search: Mobile networks > Network operators, turn off "Select automatically" and pick a listed local operator. If one fails, try the next.
  5. APN: most profiles configure themselves. If yours did not, ask support for the exact APN rather than guessing.

VoaSim connects automatically to local networks on 4G and, where the network supports it, 5G. Availability varies by country and by spot — a valley or a basement is still a valley or a basement.

Still nothing? Use eSIM Rescue and talk to a human

When the checklist runs out, stop guessing. VoaSim runs a free tool, eSIM Rescue, that diagnoses an eSIM with no signal — any brand, not only ours. It walks you through the device state and points at the actual cause.

After that, write to hola@voasim.com or use the on-site chat. Support is human, and if you left a WhatsApp number at checkout there is a heads-up channel there too. The guarantee is simple: if the eSIM will not connect and support cannot fix it, you get a 100% refund.

One more thing worth knowing before you troubleshoot for an hour: there are places where no eSIM of ours will work. The island Caribbean — Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica, Bahamas, Aruba, Curaçao — is not covered today. Puerto Rico is, on US networks. And on a cruise, the eSIM works on land at ports, not out at sea. More on where we reach on the coverage and trust page.

Is your Galaxy even eSIM-capable?

If the SIM manager shows no way to add an eSIM, the phone may not support one. Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer generally do, as do most phones released from 2020 on.

The universal test: dial *#06#. If an EID number appears alongside the IMEI, the phone has eSIM hardware. No EID, no eSIM — and VoaSim does not sell physical SIM cards, so an older Galaxy needs a different solution.

Carrier-locked handsets are the other trap. They may show an EID and still refuse a foreign profile. Ask your carrier to unlock before the trip.

FAQ

Why does my Samsung show signal bars but no internet?
Almost always data roaming is off for the eSIM line, or the phone is still using your home SIM for mobile data. Open SIM manager, set the eSIM as the mobile data SIM, then enable data roaming for that line only. Test with Wi-Fi fully switched off.
Do I need to remove my physical SIM?
No. Your physical SIM and your phone number keep working, and WhatsApp stays on your number. Just turn off data roaming on the home carrier line so it cannot bill you, and point mobile data at the VoaSim eSIM.
I turned the eSIM on at home by mistake. Did I lose days?
Days start counting at the first connection to a network at the destination, not at purchase. If your phone connected abroad, the clock is running. At home, keep the eSIM line off until you land — on Android, do not switch on the eSIM's data before the trip.
How do I know if my Galaxy supports eSIM?
Dial *#06#. If an EID appears next to the IMEI, the phone has eSIM hardware. Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer usually do, along with most phones launched from 2020 on. Carrier-locked phones must be unlocked first.
Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot for my laptop?
Do not count on it. Hotspot and tethering depend on the plan, so confirm with VoaSim support before you rely on it for work. Everything else — maps, WhatsApp, app calls, streaming — runs on the eSIM's unlimited data without a cap or throttling.
What if support cannot get my eSIM online?
You get a 100% refund. Start with the free eSIM Rescue tool at voasim.com/sos, which diagnoses eSIMs from any brand, then contact hola@voasim.com or the on-site chat. Support is human and will tell you straight if the device or destination is the blocker.
Does the eSIM work on a cruise ship?
On land at ports, yes, where the destination is covered. At sea it will not connect — ships rely on satellite systems, not local mobile networks. Note that the island Caribbean is not covered right now, though Puerto Rico works on US networks.
