eSIM not working abroad: the 2-minute checklist (any brand)
Key facts
- Data roaming switched off for the travel line is the most common reason an eSIM shows no signal.
- Set the eSIM as your mobile data line and turn data roaming off on your home SIM to stop the phone flipping back.
- Dial *#06# — no EID means the phone does not support eSIM, and no brand will work on it.
- VoaSim's free eSIM Rescue tool at voasim.com/sos diagnoses eSIMs from any provider.
- VoaSim plans run from USD 18.90 for 5 days to USD 106.90 for 60 days, unlimited data, same price in every covered destination.
Want us to confirm it for your case?
You land, turn off airplane mode, and nothing. No bars, no data, and a taxi app you cannot open. It happens, and it is almost never a broken eSIM. Nine times out of ten it is one toggle in the wrong position.
Run the checklist below in order. It works for any eSIM brand, not just VoaSim. If you get to the end and still have no signal, the free eSIM Rescue tool walks you through a guided diagnosis.
The 8 checks, in order
Do them one at a time and test after each. Do not change five settings at once, or you will not know what fixed it.
- Airplane mode off, then on for 15 seconds, then off again. This forces a fresh network search.
- Is the eSIM line switched on? In your SIM settings, the travel line must be active, not just installed.
- Data roaming ON for the eSIM line. This is the single most common cause. A travel eSIM connects to a partner network, so the phone reads it as roaming.
- Set the eSIM as your mobile data line. If your home SIM is still selected for data, you are burning your carrier's roaming rates, not the eSIM.
- Turn off data roaming on your home SIM so it cannot grab the connection.
- Manual network search. Settings > Mobile Network > Network Selection > turn off Automatic and pick a local carrier from the list.
- Restart the phone. Boring, works often.
- Check the APN if your provider gave you one.
Check 3 in detail: data roaming is the #1 culprit
People switch data roaming off before a trip to avoid a bill from their home carrier. Smart move for the physical SIM. But the setting is per line, and if you leave it off for the travel eSIM, the eSIM cannot register on any local network.
On iPhone: Settings > Mobile Service > tap the eSIM line > Data Roaming ON. On Android: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > select the eSIM > Roaming ON.
Then do the mirror image on your home line: data roaming OFF. Your number stays active for SMS and WhatsApp (WhatsApp runs on your number over the eSIM's data), but your carrier cannot charge you for data you are not using.
With a VoaSim eSIM this is all you normally touch. The line connects to local networks automatically on 4G, and 5G where the local network has it.
"It says No Service" vs "connected but no internet"
Two different problems, two different fixes.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No Service / no bars on the eSIM line | Line off, roaming off, or the phone will not attach to a network | Checks 1-6 above, then manual network selection |
| Bars showing, but pages will not load | Wrong data line selected, or missing APN | Set the eSIM as mobile data line; enter the APN your provider sent |
| Works for a minute, then drops | Phone flipping back to the home SIM | Lock data to the eSIM line and disable home roaming |
| Nothing at all, and you never got a QR code | Email in spam, or the order needs checking | Search your inbox for the provider, then contact support |

Is your phone actually eSIM compatible?
Worth confirming before you blame the provider. Dial *#06# on the keypad. If an EID number appears alongside the IMEI, your phone supports eSIM. If there is no EID, it does not, and no brand of eSIM will work on it.
As a rule: iPhone XR or newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and most phones released from 2020 on.
The other trap is a carrier-locked phone. If you bought it on an installment plan from a US or UK carrier and never unlocked it, the eSIM will install but refuse to connect to a foreign network. Ask your carrier for an unlock before you travel; it is usually free once the device is paid off.
VoaSim does not sell physical SIM cards, so an incompatible or locked handset means you need a local SIM instead. See the comparison page for how the options stack up.
Problems that start before you fly
Half of the "eSIM not working" panic at the airport is avoidable.
- Install at home, on Wi-Fi. Scanning a QR code needs a connection, and airport Wi-Fi is not a plan.
- Do not switch the eSIM line on before you leave. With VoaSim, the days start counting at the first connection to a network at your destination. On Android especially, keep the eSIM's data off until you land.
- Screenshot the QR code and save the installation email offline. Some codes can only be scanned once.
- Check your spam folder. VoaSim's QR arrives by email within minutes of payment, plus a WhatsApp heads-up if you left a number.
Installation guides for iPhone and Android are in the guides section, and the airports page covers what to do in the first ten minutes after landing.
Where eSIMs genuinely will not work
Some failures are not fixable, and it is fair to say so up front.
- At sea. A travel eSIM works on land, at cruise ports and in town. Out on open water there is no terrestrial network to connect to. Only the ship's satellite service works there.
- Destinations with no coverage. VoaSim covers 170 destinations, but not the island Caribbean right now: Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica, Bahamas, Aruba, Curaçao. Puerto Rico works, because it runs on US networks.
- Deep rural areas and tunnels. An eSIM uses the same local towers as everyone else. If a local carrier has no signal there, neither will you.
If VoaSim's eSIM simply will not connect and support cannot fix it, you get a 100% refund. Details on the trust page.
