"Data roaming" sounds like something to avoid, and for your home carrier it usually is. For a travel eSIM it is the opposite: the eSIM is a foreign profile using local networks, so roaming has to be enabled on that line or you get no data at all.

Why an eSIM needs data roaming ON
Your travel eSIM is issued outside the country you are visiting. When you land, it looks for a local partner network and registers there. Technically that registration is roaming, so if the phone has roaming blocked on that line, the connection is refused and you see "No Service" or a signal bar with no internet.

iPhone: the exact steps
- Install the eSIM at home, right after the QR code arrives by email. Do not travel with it uninstalled.
- Go to Settings > Cellular. You will see two lines: your carrier and the VoaSim eSIM.
- Tap the VoaSim line, then Turn On This Line only after you land.
- Inside that same line, switch Data Roaming to ON.
- Go back and set Cellular Data to the VoaSim line.
- Tap your physical SIM line and set Data Roaming to OFF.
Keep Allow Cellular Data Switching off, so the iPhone does not quietly fall back to your home carrier. Then toggle airplane mode on and off once to force a fresh network search.

Android: the same logic, different menus
Menu names vary by brand, but the path is close to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs (Samsung: Connections > SIM manager).

- Open your physical SIM line and disable Roaming there.
- Leave Calls and SMS on the physical SIM if you want to keep receiving codes.
One Android-specific detail: do not switch on the eSIM's mobile data before the trip. No signal after landing? Check in this order
- Airplane mode on, wait 10 seconds, airplane mode off.
- Confirm the eSIM line is turned on and Data Roaming is ON for it.
