eSIMs for a family trip: one per phone, dates and payment

Family trips break most data plans. Two parents, two teenagers, four phones, four sets of maps, videos and group chats. The good news: an eSIM is bought per phone, installed in minutes and, with VoaSim, the data is truly unlimited on every line — no cap, no throttling, no hidden fair use rule.

How many eSIMs does a family need?

One per phone that needs its own internet. An eSIM is a digital profile locked to one device — you cannot move it to a second phone or share the same QR code twice.

• Four people, four phones = four eSIMs.
• A child with a tablet that has eSIM support and needs data outside Wi-Fi = one more eSIM.
• Younger kids who stay next to a parent = no eSIM needed if they only use Wi-Fi at the hotel.

Do not count on sharing one line by hotspot. Tethering depends on the plan and should be confirmed with support before you rely on it — never plan a family trip around it.

Check each phone before buying: dial *#06# and look for an EID. If an EID appears, that phone supports eSIM. iPhone XR or newer, Galaxy S20 or newer, Pixel 3 or newer and most phones from 2020 on are fine. Carrier-locked phones must be unlocked first. See the full list on our eSIM page.

Price per phone, and the second eSIM discount

VoaSim charges one price per duration, the same for every destination. You pick the number of days, not gigabytes.

Buying and paying for the whole family at once

One parent can buy every eSIM in a single order and pay with one international credit or debit card in USD through Stripe. No hidden fees, no local-currency billing, and the invoice arrives by email.

1. Choose the destination and the dates in the simulator.
2. Add one eSIM per phone in the same order so the second-eSIM discount applies.
3. Pay by card; a WhatsApp number at checkout is optional and only used for a heads-up.
4. Each QR code lands in your email inbox within minutes.

Forward one QR code to each family member, or install them yourself one by one from the same email. Keep the message — if a phone loses the profile, you will want it. There is no early-booking discount on the English site: the table price is the price whether you buy today or the night before the flight.

Install before you fly, activate when you land

Install every eSIM at home, on Wi-Fi, while you still have time and patience. The step-by-step guide covers iPhone and Android and takes a few minutes per phone.

The days only start counting at the first connection to a network at the destination. So installing early costs you nothing — as long as you keep the eSIM line switched off until you land. On Android in particular, do not turn on the eSIM's mobile data before the trip.

On the plane or right after landing, for each phone:

• Turn off data roaming on the home carrier line.
• Turn on the VoaSim eSIM line and set it as the data line.
• Leave the physical SIM active for calls and SMS if you want — your number and WhatsApp stay on it.

Different dates, different plans in one family

Families do not always travel as one block. You can mix durations in the same order:

• Parents staying 15 days: USD 42.90 each.
• A teenager flying home after 7 days: USD 23.90.
• Someone extending to 30 days: USD 61.90, at USD 2.06 a day.

Coverage also travels with you. The Europe plan covers 50 countries with one eSIM, including Switzerland, the UK, Turkey, Norway and Iceland — so a multi-country family trip needs one eSIM per phone, not one per border. In total, VoaSim covers 170 destinations on every continent, connecting automatically to local 4G networks and, where available, 5G.

Two limits worth knowing before booking: there is no coverage in the island Caribbean (Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica, Bahamas, Aruba, Curaçao), though Puerto Rico works on US networks. And on a cruise, the eSIM works in port, not at sea.

If one phone lands without signal

With four phones, odds are one will act up. Work through the checks in order on that phone:

1. Airplane mode on for 15 seconds, then off.
2. Confirm the VoaSim line is switched on and selected as the mobile data line.
3. Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line (this is normal and expected for a travel eSIM).
4. Turn off data roaming on the home carrier line so the phone stops fighting for the connection.
5. Restart the phone.
6. Still nothing? Select the network manually in settings and pick another local operator.

When another option might suit your family better

Honest comparison. VoaSim is a good fit when several people will stream, navigate and video-call without watching a counter, and when you want the same price for every destination.
