eSIM stopped working mid-trip: what to try before you panic
Key facts
- Most eSIM failures are settings: data roaming off for the eSIM line, or mobile data assigned to the wrong SIM.
- Never delete the eSIM profile to troubleshoot — most QR codes install only once.
- The free eSIM Rescue tool at voasim.com/sos diagnoses an eSIM of any brand with no signal.
- VoaSim charges one price per duration for all 170 destinations, from USD 18.90 for 5 days to USD 106.90 for 60 days, with truly unlimited data.
- If a VoaSim eSIM cannot connect and support cannot fix it, you get a 100% refund.
Want us to confirm it for your case?
You land, the eSIM worked for two days, and now the bars are gone. It is stressful, but in most cases the eSIM itself is fine — a setting flipped, the phone latched onto a weak tower, or data roaming got switched off for that line.
Here is the exact order to check things, from the 10-second fixes to the ones that need support. It works for any eSIM brand, not just VoaSim.
The 8 checks, in order
Do them one at a time and test after each. Do not change five things at once.
- Airplane mode on for 15 seconds, then off. This forces a fresh network search.
- Check the eSIM line is on. In Settings, the travel eSIM must be enabled, not just installed.
- Set mobile data to the eSIM line. Phones often default back to the physical SIM after an update.
- Turn data roaming ON for the eSIM line. A travel eSIM always roams abroad. Without this, no data.
- Turn data roaming OFF on your home carrier line so your phone stops preferring it (and so you avoid a surprise bill).
- Reboot the phone. Boring, but it clears a lot of stuck registrations.
- Pick a network manually. Network selection → turn off Automatic → choose another local operator from the list.
- Check the plan is still valid. Days count from first connection at destination, so a 5-day plan can simply have run out.
If you still have no signal: APN and network mode
Two settings break data more often than anything else.
APN. If the phone shows bars but nothing loads, the APN for the eSIM line may be wrong or empty. Support can give you the exact value for your eSIM; do not copy an APN you found on a forum for a different brand.
Network mode. If the phone is locked to 5G only and 5G is patchy where you are, force 4G/LTE for that line. Coverage on VoaSim is 4G and, where available, 5G — 4G is usually the stable choice in rural areas, on trains and in mountains.
Also check you are not in a place with no service at all: inside stone buildings, underground stations, on a ferry. Cruise ships are a common trap — a travel eSIM works on land in port, not out at sea.
Still stuck? Run the free eSIM Rescue tool. It diagnoses an eSIM of any brand with no signal and tells you what to fix.
Common causes, ranked by how often they happen
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Bars, but nothing loads | Wrong APN or data set to the wrong line | Switch mobile data to the eSIM; ask support for the APN |
| No bars at all | Data roaming off for the eSIM line | Turn roaming ON for that line only |
| Worked, then died on day 6 | Plan days expired | Buy a new plan or extend |
| Drops in one town only | Weak partner tower | Select network manually |
| Died after a system update | Line reset to default SIM | Re-enable the eSIM line in Settings |
| Nothing works anywhere | Carrier-locked phone | Unlock with your home carrier |
Note the pattern: almost every row is a setting, not a broken eSIM.
Do not delete the eSIM
This is the single most expensive mistake travelers make. Once you delete an eSIM profile from the phone, most QR codes cannot be installed a second time. You may have a valid plan and no way to load it.
Before deleting anything, contact support. VoaSim has human support at hola@voasim.com and on-site chat, and WhatsApp if you left a number at checkout. Explain what you already tried from the list above — it cuts the back-and-forth in half.
Same logic for a factory reset: do not do it to fix a data problem abroad. And if you do need to reinstall, do it on hotel Wi-Fi, never on mobile data that is already failing.
If a VoaSim eSIM genuinely will not connect and support cannot fix it, you get a 100% refund. Details on how we handle that.
How to avoid it happening at all
Most mid-trip failures trace back to how the eSIM was set up before departure.
- Install at home, on Wi-Fi, days before you fly. The QR code arrives by email within minutes of purchase.
- Keep the eSIM line off until you land. Days start counting at the first connection at the destination. On Android especially, do not switch on the eSIM's data before the trip.
- Check compatibility first. Dial *#06# — if an EID appears, your phone supports eSIM. iPhone XR or newer, Galaxy S20 or newer, Pixel 3 or newer, and most phones from 2020 on.
- Make sure the phone is carrier-unlocked. A locked phone will reject the profile no matter what you try.
- Keep your physical SIM in the phone. Your number and WhatsApp stay live; just turn off your home carrier's data roaming.

If the plan simply ran out: VoaSim prices
Sometimes the eSIM stopped working for the simplest reason — the days are gone. VoaSim uses one price per duration, the same for all 170 destinations, with truly unlimited data: no cap, no throttling, no hidden fair-use clause.
| Duration | Price | Per day |
|---|---|---|
| 5 days | USD 18.90 | USD 3.78 |
| 7 days | USD 23.90 | USD 3.41 |
| 10 days | USD 30.90 | USD 3.09 |
| 15 days | USD 42.90 | USD 2.86 |
| 30 days | USD 61.90 | USD 2.06 |
| 60 days | USD 106.90 | USD 1.78 |
Trips of 1–4 days pay the 5-day package; the maximum is 90 days per eSIM. A second eSIM in the same order gets 10% extra off. Payment is by international card in USD via Stripe. Check your exact price in the simulator.
When another option may suit you better
Be fair to yourself about what you actually need. If you use very little data and only want maps and messages, a small GB package from a brand like Airalo, Nomad, Ubigi or Saily sold through its app may cost you less — check the cap, validity and tethering rules in each one's terms.
If you need a local phone number for bank SMS or local deliveries, no travel eSIM replaces that; a local physical SIM does, though it usually means a shop, passport registration and taking your home SIM out. And if your carrier's roaming add-on (T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, EE, Vodafone, Three and others) is already bundled into your plan, it can be the easiest choice — check the current rate and daily allowance in your carrier's app before you leave.
Our take on the trade-offs is in compare and roaming.
