eSIM installed but not showing: where it hides on iPhone and Android
Key facts
- On iPhone the eSIM lives in Settings > Cellular > SIMs; on Android in Settings > Network & internet > SIMs or SIM manager.
- A VoaSim eSIM kept switched off before the trip is normal — days only start at the first connection at the destination.
- If the line is missing entirely, the QR download failed; retry on stable Wi-Fi instead of deleting the profile.
- The free eSIM Rescue tool at voasim.com/sos/ diagnoses no-signal eSIMs from any brand, not only VoaSim.
- VoaSim prices run from USD 18.90 for 5 days to USD 106.90 for 60 days, unlimited data, same price in every destination.
Want us to confirm it for your case?
"I installed my eSIM and now I can't find it." This is the most common panic message travelers send from an airport. The good news: in most cases the eSIM is there, just sitting under a menu name you did not expect, or turned off on purpose so the days do not start counting.
Here is the check order, from the fastest fix to the real problems, using only what actually happens on iPhone and Android.
Where the eSIM line actually lives on your phone
Different phone makers use different words for the same screen. Start here:
- iPhone (iOS 16 and newer): Settings > Cellular. Under SIMs you should see your physical line plus the added eSIM, usually labeled "Travel", "Secondary" or the plan name.
- iPhone, older iOS: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Plans.
- Samsung Galaxy: Settings > Connections > SIM manager.
- Google Pixel / stock Android: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs (tap the arrow next to the carrier name).
- Other Android brands: Settings > Mobile network > SIM card management.
If the line appears but shows "No Service" or a gray carrier name, the profile installed correctly and this is a signal problem, not a missing eSIM. If the line is not listed anywhere, the installation never finished and you need to run the QR code again. Both cases are covered below and in our setup guides.
Step 1: is the line simply turned off?
With VoaSim we tell you to install at home and keep the eSIM line off until you land, because the validity days start counting at the first connection to a network at the destination. Many travelers then forget they switched it off and think the eSIM vanished.
To turn it on:
- iPhone: Settings > Cellular > tap the eSIM line > toggle Turn On This Line.
- Android: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > select the eSIM > toggle Use SIM on, then enable Mobile data for that line.
Then set the eSIM as your data line and leave your physical SIM for calls and texts. Turn off data roaming on your home carrier so it does not bill you in the background. Your number stays on the phone, so WhatsApp keeps working as normal.
Step 2: the eSIM never installed (QR scanned, nothing added)
An eSIM profile can only be downloaded over an internet connection, and most QR codes can only be installed once. If nothing appears in the SIM menus:
- Connect to stable Wi-Fi and try again. Airport Wi-Fi with a login page often breaks the download halfway.
- Re-open the QR code from the email VoaSim sent you within minutes of purchase and scan it from another screen, or use the manual entry (SM-DP+ address and activation code) in the same email.
- Check the phone is not carrier-locked. A locked handset can refuse a foreign profile.
- Confirm the device supports eSIM: dial *#06#. If an EID number shows, it does. VoaSim works on iPhone XR or newer, Galaxy S20 or newer, Pixel 3 or newer and most phones released from 2020 on.
Never delete a profile to "start clean" before talking to support. Deleting can burn the QR code for good.
Step 3: the line shows but there is no signal
If the eSIM is listed and active but you see no bars, work through these in order:
- Toggle Airplane mode on and off, then wait 60 seconds.
- Restart the phone completely.
- Check that Data Roaming is ON for the eSIM line (this is required abroad, even though you are not roaming on your home plan).
- Set network selection to Automatic, then try selecting a local network manually.
- Confirm the eSIM is chosen as the Mobile Data line, not just installed.
Still nothing? Use our free eSIM Rescue tool — it diagnoses an eSIM from any brand with no signal, not just ours. VoaSim support is human and reachable at hola@voasim.com or the on-site chat. If the eSIM will not connect and we cannot fix it, you get a 100% refund. See how our guarantee works.
Two cases where nothing is broken
You have not landed yet. A VoaSim eSIM connects to local networks at the destination. Sitting at home, the line can look idle or show no service. That is expected, and it protects your days.
You are at sea. eSIMs work on land, including cruise ports, but not in the middle of the ocean. Onboard signal comes from the ship's satellite service.
One more: VoaSim is a data-only eSIM. There is no phone number and no traditional voice calls, so do not look for a new number in your settings. WhatsApp calls, app calls and maps all run over data. Your physical SIM keeps your number and your SMS codes. Full coverage list on our destinations page.
