Check if your phone has eSIM
If you bought your iPhone 15, 16 or 17 in the United States, it has no SIM tray at all. Apple removed it. That surprises people at the airport in Lisbon or Bangkok, when the old plan was "I'll just buy a local SIM when I land".

What "eSIM only" actually means on your iPhone

- Turn off Data Roaming on your US line, in Settings → Cellular → your home plan. This is the step that prevents a surprise carrier bill.
- Turn the VoaSim line on and set it as your cellular data line.
- Make sure Data Roaming is on for the VoaSim line — that's how it reaches local networks.
- Wait a minute or two. The iPhone picks a local partner network on 4G, or 5G where available.

- Airplane mode off, then toggle it on and off once to force a network search.
- Settings → Cellular → confirm the VoaSim line is switched on.
- Set Cellular Data to the VoaSim line, not your US line.
- Turn Data Roaming on for the VoaSim line. This is the single most common miss.
- Network Selection → turn Automatic on; if it's already on, pick a local carrier manually.
- Restart the iPhone and wait two full minutes.
