Most "best eSIM" lists rank brands. That is the wrong question. The right one is: which eSIM works where you are going, how much data do you actually get, and what does it cost for your exact number of days?

What actually makes an eSIM "the best"

Strip away the marketing and only four things matter:

• Coverage at your destination. An eSIM is only as good as the local networks it connects to. VoaSim covers 170 destinations on every continent, including Brazil, connecting automatically on 4G and, where available, 5G.
• Real data, not a "fair use" footnote. VoaSim data is truly unlimited: no cap, no throttling, no hidden fair-use clause. Many plans sold as unlimited slow down after a daily threshold — read the terms.
• A price you can predict. One price per duration, identical for Japan, Portugal or Peru. No destination surcharge, no surprise at checkout.

If a plan wins on three of these and loses on coverage, it loses. Check the destination first, price second.

VoaSim price table: one price per duration

Trips of 1 to 4 days pay the 5-day package. Maximum is 90 days per eSIM. A second eSIM in the same order gets 10% extra off, which is the cheapest way to cover a travel partner. By days, by GB, or by carrier roaming?

Three honest models, each with a winner scenario.

Airalo, Nomad, Ubigi, Saily, Yesim and others sell mostly by GB or by day through their apps — check the cap, validity and tethering rules in their own terms. Carrier plans like AT&T International Day Pass, Verizon TravelPass or T-Mobile's international options bill per day of use and rates change by country, so confirm the current rate in your carrier app. More detail in our comparison hub and the roaming guide.

Where VoaSim is not the right answer

Being fair beats being loud. Skip VoaSim if:

• You are going to the island Caribbean. We currently have no coverage in the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Aruba or Curaçao. Puerto Rico does work, because it runs on US networks.
• You need a local phone number for SMS codes, bank verification or restaurant bookings. VoaSim is data only. WhatsApp, app calls and maps work over data, and your own number stays live on your physical SIM.
• You will be at sea. On a cruise, the eSIM works on land at ports, not offshore.
• Your phone has no eSIM slot. We do not sell physical SIM cards. Dial *#06#: if an EID appears, you are fine.
• You need guaranteed hotspot sharing. Tethering depends on the plan — ask support before you rely on it for a laptop.

In those cases a local SIM or a by-GB brand may serve you better, and we would rather say so now than refund you later.

How to pick your plan in two minutes

1. Count door to door. Departure day to return day, not nights in the hotel. A 9-night trip is usually a 10-day plan.
2. Open your destination page. Use the destination index to confirm coverage and local details. Travelling around Europe? One Europe eSIM covers 50 countries, including Switzerland, the UK, Turkey, Norway and Iceland.
3. Check compatibility. iPhone XR or newer, Galaxy S20 or newer, Pixel 3 or newer, and most phones from 2020 on. Carrier-locked phones must be unlocked first.
4. Buy and install at home. The QR code arrives by email within minutes. Install before you fly, then keep the eSIM line switched off until you land.
5. On landing: turn on the eSIM line, turn off your home carrier's data roaming. Days start counting at the first connection at the destination.

Guarantee, support and what happens if it fails

Every eSIM breaks for someone eventually — usually an install done on the plane, a locked handset or data roaming left on for the eSIM line. What matters is the path back.
