An eSIM is a digital SIM. You scan a QR code, a new line appears on your phone, and when you land the phone connects to a local Indian network automatically. When a local Indian SIM is the smarter move
Buying a local Jio or Airtel SIM in India can beat any travel eSIM in two situations.
- Long stays. If you are in India for months on a student or work visa, local prepaid plans are extremely cheap and the 90-day cap of a travel eSIM becomes a problem.
- You need an Indian number. Some local apps, delivery services and bank or ticketing flows send SMS verification codes to Indian numbers only. A data-only eSIM cannot receive those.
The trade-offs are real, though. A tourist SIM in India requires passport and visa documents, a registration form, sometimes a local address or reference, and activation that can take hours. You queue at the airport or a shop, and your own SIM comes out of the phone — so your home number leaves with it.
For a 7 to 21-day holiday, most travellers pick the eSIM: it is live before you clear immigration, and the home number stays reachable on WhatsApp.
Install before you fly: the rule that saves your first day

If it does not connect when you land
Ninety per cent of "no signal" cases in India are settings, not the eSIM. Run through this on arrival:
- Turn airplane mode on and off once after landing.
- Switch the VoaSim line on and set it as your mobile data line.
- Turn data roaming ON for the eSIM line (this is normal and expected) and OFF for your home carrier.
- If nothing appears, search networks manually and pick an Indian operator such as Airtel or Jio.
