Argentina is a country of long distances. You can spend a morning in Buenos Aires, fly to El Calafate in the afternoon and be on a bus to El Chaltén the next day. Maps, ride apps, boarding passes and WhatsApp all run on data, and that is exactly where a travel eSIM saves you time and money.
This guide shows what an eSIM actually does in Argentina, what VoaSim costs for each trip length, how by-GB brands compare, and the cases where a local SIM or a small data pack is genuinely the smarter buy.
How an eSIM works in Argentina (networks and real coverage)
An eSIM is a digital SIM profile. You scan a QR code, the profile installs on your phone, and when you land the phone latches onto a local partner network — in Argentina that means the big three: Claro, Personal and Movistar. You do not choose the operator; the eSIM picks whichever gives the best signal at that moment.
What to expect on the ground:
- Buenos Aires: solid 4G across the city, subte stations included in most areas.
- Mendoza, Córdoba, Bariloche, Salta: reliable coverage in town and in the main tourist zones.
- El Calafate and Ushuaia: works in the towns and around the main access points.
- Deep Patagonia: on Ruta 40 and long stretches between towns there is no signal from any carrier. That is geography, not the eSIM.
Where available you may get 5G, but plan your trip around 4G and download offline maps before any long drive. See the Argentina eSIM page for details.

VoaSim charges by trip length, not by gigabytes. The same table applies to Argentina and to every other destination, so you never pay a "South America surcharge". Prices below already include today's 15% promo.

Payment is by international credit or debit card in USD through Stripe, with an invoice by email. Run your dates in the price simulator for the exact figure.
Unlimited vs. by-GB: which one wins for Argentina
Most eSIM brands sell you a bucket of gigabytes. Airalo, Nomad, Ubigi, Saily, Alosim and others work that way, usually through their own app. Holafly sells "unlimited" plans with usage conditions written into its terms. Every brand defines caps, validity and tethering differently, so read the specific terms before buying.
Rough rule for Argentina:
- Heavy or unpredictable use — Google Maps all day, Cabify and Uber, Instagram stories from Iguazú, video calls home: unlimited removes the math. VoaSim has no cap, no throttling and no hidden fair-use clause.
- Light use — hotel Wi-Fi most of the day, a few messages outside: a small by-GB pack can genuinely cost less. Buy that instead.
- Very long stays — three months or more living in Buenos Aires: a local postpaid or prepaid line is usually cheaper and gives you an Argentine number.

When a local SIM or carrier roaming makes more sense
We are not going to pretend an eSIM wins every time.
Buy a local Argentine SIM if you need a local phone number — for bank verification, some delivery apps, or a long rental. Expect to visit a shop, show your passport (registration is required for most local lines), and swap out your own SIM, which means your home number leaves the phone.
Use your carrier's roaming if your plan already bundles Argentina at no extra cost, or if you are there for two days and just need WhatsApp. T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, EE, Vodafone, Telstra and others charge per day of use or bundle an allowance, often with reduced speeds after it. Rates change by country and plan, so check the current one in your carrier's app before you fly — and switch the option on beforehand. Our roaming overview explains the trade-offs.
Choose a travel eSIM if you want to keep your number, land connected and not think about gigabytes.
Install before you fly: the 5-minute checklist
Buy, receive, install at home. That is the whole trick.
- Check compatibility. iPhone XR or newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 or newer, Pixel 3 or newer, and most phones from 2020 on. Universal test: dial *#06# — if an EID appears, your phone supports eSIM. A carrier-locked phone must be unlocked first.
- Order. The QR code arrives by email within minutes, plus a WhatsApp heads-up if you left a number.
- Install at home, following the iPhone or Android guide in the email. Keep the eSIM line switched off until you land — on Android, do not turn on the eSIM's data before the trip.
- On landing in Ezeiza, Aeroparque or Bariloche: turn off data roaming on your home carrier, switch the eSIM line on, set it as the data line.
Your days start counting at the first connection to a network in Argentina, not at purchase. Airport-by-airport notes are in airport guides.
If something goes wrong
Two safety nets. The free eSIM Rescue tool diagnoses an eSIM with no signal — any brand, not just ours — and walks you through the usual causes: APN settings, the wrong line selected as data, roaming toggled off on the eSIM profile.
If the eSIM still will not connect and our support team cannot fix it, you get a 100% refund. Support is human, by email at hola@voasim.com or through the chat on the site.
Two things worth knowing before you buy: this is a data-only eSIM, so there is no Argentine phone number and no traditional voice calls — WhatsApp, app calls and maps all work over data on your own number. And hotspot/tethering depends on the plan, so ask support before you count on sharing the connection with a laptop or a travel partner. More on how we operate on the trust page.
