"Unlimited" is the most abused word in the travel eSIM market. Some plans are unlimited until you hit a number buried in the terms, then drop to a speed where Google Maps crawls. Others are unlimited only on the phone screen, not when you share the connection.
This page explains the difference in plain terms, shows exactly what a Turkey eSIM costs with VoaSim, and gives you a short checklist to read any brand's fine print before you pay.
Truly unlimited vs "unlimited with fair use"
There are three common versions of "unlimited" on sale today.
- Truly unlimited: no data cap, no throttling, no hidden fair-use policy. That is what VoaSim sells. You stream, upload, video call and navigate without watching a counter.
- Unlimited with a daily allowance: you get high speed up to X GB per day, then the speed drops for the rest of the day. Useful for light use, frustrating if you work from the road.
- Unlimited with a fair-use clause: the word unlimited appears in the ad, and a condition appears in the terms. Holafly, for example, describes usage conditions and tethering limits in its own terms — read them on its official site before buying.
None of these is dishonest by default. The problem is buying the first and getting the third. In Turkey, where you will lean on maps in Istanbul's old town and upload a lot of Cappadocia balloon photos, the difference shows up fast.

Turkey eSIM prices: one price per duration

Trips of 1 to 4 days pay the 5-day package. Maximum is 90 days per eSIM. A second eSIM in the same order gets 10% extra off — handy for a couple, since each phone needs its own eSIM. Payment is by international credit or debit card in USD through Stripe, with an invoice by email and no hidden fees.
Coverage in Turkey: networks and cities
The eSIM connects automatically to local Turkish networks — Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom — with no manual setup. You get 4G and, where the network supports it, 5G. We do not promise 5G anywhere, because it depends on the tower you are standing under.
In practice, 4G is strong across Istanbul, including the Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu areas where you will be walking with a map open. Cappadocia is well covered, including the plateau where the balloon flights take off at dawn. Antalya, Izmir and the main coastal resorts are fine too. Rural mountain roads and remote stretches of the Black Sea coast can be patchier — that is the local network's footprint, not the eSIM.
One note for cruise passengers stopping in Kuşadası or Istanbul: the eSIM works on land, at the port and in the city, but not at sea. Onboard connectivity is satellite and only the ship sells it.

Checklist: how to read any unlimited eSIM's terms
Before you buy from any brand — us included — check these five things in the seller's own terms.
- Is there a daily or total cap? Search the terms page for "GB", "fair use" and "policy". If a number appears, the plan is capped.
- What happens after the cap? Throttled speed, paid top-up, or cut-off. Throttled at 512 kbps is not the same as unlimited.
- Is tethering allowed? Many unlimited plans restrict hotspot. With VoaSim, do not assume it — it depends on the plan, so ask support before you rely on it for a laptop.
- When does validity start? Ours starts at the first connection to a network in Turkey, not at purchase.

Brands sold by gigabyte — Airalo, Nomad, Saily, Ubigi, Yesim and others — are clearer on volume but you have to estimate your usage. If you are a light user on a short trip, a small GB package can genuinely cost less.
When another option is the better pick for Turkey
Unlimited is not automatically the smart buy.
- You use very little data. Two days in Istanbul, hotel Wi-Fi most of the time, maps downloaded offline: a 1 GB package from a by-the-gigabyte brand may be cheaper. Check Airalo, Nomad or Ubigi on their own apps.
- Your carrier bundles Turkey. Some T-Mobile, Google Fi, EE, Vodafone and Three plans include international data. Open your carrier app and check the current rate for Turkey — speeds after the daily allowance are often reduced, and it usually has to be switched on before you fly. See our roaming notes.
- You need a Turkish phone number. A data eSIM has no number and no traditional voice calls. WhatsApp, FaceTime and app calls work over data on your existing number. If you truly need a local number, buy a physical SIM in a shop with your passport — note that Turkey registers foreign handsets, so ask about the IMEI rule at the counter.
For heavy users, remote workers and anyone doing a two-week loop, unlimited wins on peace of mind.
Install before you fly, activate when you land
The QR code arrives by email within minutes of payment (plus a WhatsApp heads-up if you left a number). Install it at home, on Wi-Fi, while you still have someone to ask. Then leave the eSIM line switched off until you land in Turkey — on Android, do not turn on the eSIM's mobile data before the trip — because the countdown starts at the first connection to a Turkish network.
Your physical SIM and your number stay in the phone and keep working. Just turn off your home carrier's data roaming so nothing bills you by accident.
