When a local SIM or carrier roaming is the smarter pick

A local Portuguese SIM makes sense if you're staying for months, need a Portuguese phone number for deliveries, bank verification or a landlord, or want a long-term contract. Downsides: you need a shop, usually passport registration, airport time, and your own SIM comes out of the phone — so your home number leaves with it.
Your carrier's roaming (T-Mobile, AT&T International Day Pass, Verizon TravelPass, EE, Vodafone, Three, Rogers, Telstra and others) can win on a very short stop — a one-night layover in Lisbon, say — or when you absolutely need your own number to ring. Buying, installing and landing in Portugal
