Unlimited data eSIM for Spain: what "unlimited" really means and what it costs

"Unlimited" is the most abused word in the travel eSIM business. Some plans are unlimited until you hit a daily allowance, then speeds drop to something that barely loads a map. Others are unlimited except for tethering, video or a fair-use ceiling buried in the terms.

Truly unlimited vs "unlimited with fair use"

Three things separate a real unlimited plan from a marketing one. Check all three in any brand's terms before you buy:

• Daily or total cap. Many "unlimited" plans give you a high-speed allowance per day. After it, you are still connected — just slowly.
• Throttling. Look for wording like "speeds may be reduced" or "network management". That is a cap with a friendlier name.
• Fair-use clause. A line reserving the right to limit or suspend "excessive" use, without a public number attached to it.

How much data do you actually burn in Spain?

Unlimited pays off when your phone is your only tool on the ground. A typical day in Barcelona looks like this: Google Maps from Sants station to the apartment, a video call home, restaurant menus by QR code, a couple of hours of music on the metro, photos uploading to the cloud, WhatsApp voice notes, and a film on the AVE back to Madrid.

Counting gigabytes for that is stressful. If you are a heavy user — hotspotting a laptop aside — a flat plan removes the math entirely. If you mostly use hotel Wi-Fi and open maps twice a day, a small GB package from a by-the-gigabyte brand may genuinely cost you less, and we would rather you know that.

Installing before you fly, and when the days start

The QR code lands in your inbox within minutes of payment (plus a WhatsApp heads-up if you left a number). Install it at home, on Wi-Fi, where you have time and a working connection — not in a queue at Barajas.

1. Check compatibility: iPhone XR or newer, Galaxy S20 or newer, Pixel 3 or newer, and most phones from 2020 on. Universal test: dial *#06# and look for an EID. Carrier-locked phones must be unlocked first.
