Unlimited data eSIM for Germany: what "unlimited" really means and what it costs

"Unlimited" is the most abused word in the travel eSIM business. Some plans give you unlimited gigabytes at full speed. Others give you a few gigabytes at full speed and then drop you to a crawl for the rest of the trip, with the details buried in a fair-use clause.

What "truly unlimited" means on the VoaSim eSIM

How to read a fair-use clause before you buy

Most eSIM brands are honest — you just have to read the right paragraph. Before paying for any "unlimited" plan, check these five things in the terms, not in the marketing copy:

• Daily cap. Many unlimited plans are unlimited per day with a full-speed allowance, then slow speeds until midnight. Look for a number followed by "per day".
• Throttled speed. If the terms mention a reduced speed after a threshold, find out what that speed is. Some are fine for maps, some barely load a webpage.
• Tethering. Several brands allow hotspot only up to a set amount, or not at all.
• Validity start. Does the clock start on purchase, on activation, or on first connection at the destination?
• Network access. Which German operators does it use — Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, O2?

Brands sold by gigabyte, like Airalo or Nomad, avoid the ambiguity entirely: you know exactly what you bought. Coverage in Germany and the rest of Europe

The eSIM connects automatically to local German networks — Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and O2 — on 4G and, where available, 5G. You do not pick a network manually; the phone finds the strongest signal.

In practice that means solid service in Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Cologne, along the ICE and regional rail corridors, and on the Autobahn between cities. Rural stretches of the Black Forest, the Alps and parts of the east can be patchier, as they are for German residents too.

If your trip crosses borders — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, the Netherlands — you do not need a second purchase. The Europe plan covers 50 countries on one eSIM, including Switzerland, the UK, Turkey, Norway and Iceland. Berlin to Prague to Vienna runs on the same line, at the same price per duration.

One note if a river cruise is part of the plan: the eSIM works on land, at ports and in towns, but not at sea.

Unlimited eSIM vs carrier roaming vs a German SIM card

Three realistic ways to get data in Germany. None is wrong for everyone.

If your plan already bundles Europe at no extra cost — some T-Mobile, EE, Vodafone or Google Fi plans do — roaming may genuinely be the cheaper move. Installing it and when the days start

The QR code lands in your email within minutes of payment (plus a WhatsApp heads-up if you left a number at checkout). Install it at home, on Wi-Fi, before you fly — there is a step-by-step guide for iPhone and Android.

Important: your days start counting at the first connection to a network in Germany, not at purchase. So install the profile early but keep the VoaSim line switched off until you land in Frankfurt or Berlin. On Android specifically, do not turn on the eSIM's mobile data before the trip.

Your physical SIM and your phone number keep working the whole time — WhatsApp stays on your own number. Just switch off data roaming on your home carrier so nothing bills in the background.
