O'Hare is big, busy and rarely generous with spare time. Between security, the Terminal 5 walk and a boarding call, standing in line for a physical SIM card is the last thing most travelers want to do.
The good news: if your phone supports eSIM, you can be connected before you even leave the gate area. Here is how buying at ORD compares with landing abroad with a travel eSIM already installed.
Can you buy a SIM card at ORD (Chicago) airport?
ORD has retail, vending machines and electronics kiosks spread across Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 5, and some of them sell prepaid SIM cards or international data products. But there are three catches that travelers discover too late.
- Location roulette. What is available changes by terminal, by contract and by hour. A kiosk near your gate today may be gone or closed at 6 a.m.
- Wrong country. A SIM bought in Chicago is normally for US networks. If you are flying to Europe, Japan or Brazil, it does not solve the problem at your destination.
- Time and swapping. You have to open your phone tray, remove your own SIM and keep it safe for the whole trip.

Fair note: if you need a US phone number for calls and SMS verification codes, a physical US SIM or a carrier line is the better pick. VoaSim is data only. WhatsApp, iMessage, Zoom and maps all run over data on your existing number.

Trips of 1 to 4 days pay the 5-day package. Maximum is 90 days per eSIM. Add a second eSIM in the same order and it gets 10% extra off, which is useful for couples flying out of ORD together. Payment is by international credit or debit card in USD through Stripe, with an invoice by email.
How to buy and install the eSIM at your ORD gate
Ideally you do this at home the night before. But ORD Wi-Fi is enough if you are already airside.
- Open the price simulator, pick your destination and travel dates, and pay by card.
- Check your email. The QR code arrives within minutes. If you left a number, you also get a WhatsApp heads-up.
- Follow the step-by-step guide for iPhone or Android and add the eSIM profile. You need Wi-Fi or data for this step, so do it before takeoff.
- Leave the eSIM line switched off. On Android, do not enable the eSIM's data yet.
- Turn off data roaming on your home carrier line so you do not get roaming charges.

What to do the moment you land
After the plane doors open, take your phone off airplane mode and switch the VoaSim line on. Set it as your data line and leave data roaming enabled for that line only (that is how the eSIM finds partner networks). Connection to a local 4G network, and 5G where available, is automatic.

Will your phone work? The 30-second check
Before you buy anything, dial *#06# on your keypad. If an EID number appears alongside the IMEI, your phone supports eSIM.
As a rule of thumb: iPhone XR or newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer and most phones released from 2020 on. One extra condition: the phone must be carrier-unlocked. Many US phones bought on installment plans are locked until paid off, and a locked phone will reject any foreign eSIM profile. Your carrier can unlock it, usually in a day or two, so check this before your ORD departure date, not at the gate.

When another option makes more sense
We would rather be useful than pushy.
- Island Caribbean trips. VoaSim has no coverage in the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Aruba or Curaçao right now. Puerto Rico works, since it uses US networks.
- Cruises. The eSIM works on land at ports, not at sea. Onboard connectivity is a ship package.
- Light data users. If you only check maps and messages for two days, a per-GB eSIM brand like Airalo, Nomad or Ubigi, or your carrier's day pass, may cost less. Check current rates in their own app.
- Hotspot-dependent work. Tethering depends on the plan, so ask support before you rely on it.
