Crossing borders: nothing to do
The eSIM connects automatically to whichever local network is available. In Italy that means partners such as TIM, Vodafone and WindTre; in France and Spain, the equivalent local operators. You will see the carrier name in the status bar change when you cross, and that's the whole procedure.
Some practical notes for this route:
- Night trains and high-speed lines (Milan-Paris, Barcelona-Madrid): signal drops in tunnels, like any phone on any network. It comes back on its own.
- Andorra and Monaco are separate cases from France and Spain, so don't assume coverage there; confirm before you count on it.
- Ferries to Corsica, Sardinia or the Balearics: the eSIM works on land at the ports, not out at sea.
Coverage quality is strong in Rome, Milan, Venice, Florence, Naples, Paris, Barcelona and Madrid, with 4G and 5G where the local network offers it. In rural Tuscany and along the Amalfi Coast, 4G holds up on most of the route.

When several eSIMs make more sense
Honest answer: almost never for this route. One Europe eSIM is simpler and, because VoaSim prices by duration and not by country, also cheaper than three separate purchases.
Separate products start to make sense only if your itinerary leaves Europe. If you fly Rome-Paris-Madrid and then on to Morocco, Japan or the United States, the simulator will issue the right regional product for the countries you enter. In that case you may end up with two eSIMs covering two legs of the trip.
The other scenario is duration. If Italy is a 5-day stopover months before a longer France-Spain trip, two short plans can beat one long one, because days only run while you're actually using the line.
Also worth comparing fairly: brands like Airalo, Nomad or Ubigi sell by GB, which can be fine if you barely use data. Carrier roaming from T-Mobile, Verizon, EE or Vodafone can be convenient if it's already bundled in your plan, though daily allowances and post-allowance speeds vary. Install before you fly, activate when you land
The QR code arrives by email within minutes of payment (card in USD via Stripe, invoice by email). Install it at home, while you still have Wi-Fi and time.
- Buy and open the email with the QR code.
- Scan it in your phone's settings and label the line "VoaSim".
- Leave the eSIM line switched off. On Android, do not turn on the eSIM's data before the trip.
- When you land in Rome, Paris or Barcelona, switch the eSIM line on and turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Your plan's days start counting at the first connection to a network at the destination, not at purchase. So installing early costs you nothing.
Compatibility: iPhone XR or newer, Galaxy S20 or newer, Pixel 3 or newer and most phones from 2020 on. Universal test: dial *#06# and look for an EID. Carrier-locked phones need to be unlocked first. VoaSim does not sell physical SIM cards.
Offline maps and small habits that save the trip
Unlimited data means you can stream maps all day without watching a counter. Still, download offline maps for Rome's historic centre, the Amalfi Coast, the Pyrenees and any region you'll drive through. Tunnels and mountain roads exist on every network.
