SIM card at LAX (Los Angeles) airport: buy there or land with an eSIM ready?

LAX is a big, slow airport. Between security, the shuttle between terminals and the walk to your gate, the last thing you want is to queue at a kiosk, hand over your passport and swap out your SIM tray with a paperclip.

The alternative takes about five minutes on the airport Wi-Fi: buy a travel eSIM, install the QR code before boarding, and switch it on when the wheels touch down at your destination.

Why buying a SIM card at LAX is usually the slow option

Airport SIM counters exist because people arrive unprepared, and that convenience is priced in. A few things work against you at LAX specifically:

• Terminal roulette. LAX has nine terminals. The counter you read about online may sit in a different building from your gate, and the shuttle ride eats your buffer time.
• Paperwork. Many countries (and many resellers) require ID or passport registration before activation.
• Physical swap. Your home SIM comes out of the phone. Your number leaves with it, and small trays get lost in seat pockets.
• Wrong coverage. A SIM bought at LAX is usually a US plan. If you are flying to Europe or Asia, it does nothing for you on arrival.

How to buy and install at the LAX gate, over Wi-Fi

What to do the moment you land

Three taps and you are online before you reach immigration:

• Turn off data roaming on your home carrier line. This is the step people skip, and it is the one that produces surprise bills.
• Turn on the VoaSim eSIM line and set it as your data line. It connects automatically to a local network on 4G, and on 5G where available.
• Keep your physical SIM active for calls and SMS if you want. Your number stays on the phone, so WhatsApp keeps working on your usual account.

When another option may suit you better

We would rather you pick the right tool than the one we sell. A few honest cases:

• You barely use data. If you check email twice a day, a small GB package from an app-based brand like Airalo, Nomad or Ubigi can cost less than an unlimited plan. Check the cap and the expiry in their terms.
• You need a local phone number. For bank SMS codes from a local number or long domestic calls, a physical SIM bought at your destination still wins, passport registration and all.
• Your carrier bundles travel data. T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, Google Fi and others include or sell daily international passes. Rates vary by country and often slow down after a daily allowance — check the current terms in your carrier's app before deciding.
• Your phone is old or locked. eSIM needs iPhone XR or newer, Galaxy S20 or newer, Pixel 3 or newer, roughly any phone from 2020 on, and it must be carrier-unlocked. VoaSim does not sell physical SIM cards.
