Google Fi is one of the few US carriers built with travel in mind, and for a short trip it can be all you need. But "international" means different things depending on which Fi plan you are on: some include data abroad, some bill per day, and high-speed data is usually capped before speeds drop.

How carrier international roaming works (Google Fi included)
Carrier roaming, on Fi or anyone else, follows one of two billing models:
- Bundled: a plan that already includes data abroad, with a monthly high-speed allowance. Once you pass it, the connection usually keeps working at reduced speed.
- Per day of use: you pay a daily fee only on days you use data abroad, with a daily allowance.
Two more things matter. First, international use often has to be enabled before you travel — check the app while you still have US service. Second, terms change by country and by plan; a destination that is included on one plan may not be on another.

Checklist before you fly with Google Fi
If you plan to roam on Fi, do this while you are still home:
- Open the Google Fi app and read the current international terms for your exact plan and your exact destination. Rates and included countries change.
- Confirm whether international use needs to be switched on, and switch it on.
- Check the high-speed allowance and what happens after it — reduced speed, extra charges, or both.
- Check whether tethering abroad is allowed on your plan, if you work from a laptop.
- Set a billing alert, or at least know your billing cycle date.
- Download offline maps and your boarding passes anyway. Airport Wi-Fi is not a plan.
If that all reads fine for your trip, use Fi. It keeps your number active for calls and SMS, which is genuinely useful for bank codes.
When Google Fi is the better choice
Be honest with yourself about the trip. Carrier roaming wins when:
- You are gone 1 to 2 days and will barely use data.
- Your plan already includes international data and you stay inside the high-speed allowance.
- You need voice calls and SMS on your US number constantly — a data-only eSIM does not replace that.
- Your phone is not eSIM-compatible or is carrier-locked.

Not covered by VoaSim right now: the island Caribbean (Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica, Bahamas, Aruba, Curaçao). Puerto Rico works on US networks. On a cruise, the eSIM works on land in port, not at sea.
How to set up a VoaSim eSIM alongside Fi

- Check compatibility: iPhone XR or newer, Galaxy S20 or newer, Pixel 3 or newer, most phones from 2020 on. Dial *#06# — if an EID appears, you have eSIM. Carrier-locked phones must be unlocked first.
