If you're a Telus customer flying out of Canada, Easy Roam is the simplest thing you can do: leave your phone alone, land, and your plan follows you. Simple is not always cheap, and it's not always fast either.
Here's how carrier roaming actually bills you, what to check in the My Telus app before you board, and the exact point where a travel eSIM costs less and gives you more data.
How Telus Easy Roam works (the model, not the rate)
Telus Easy Roam is a day-pass style roaming product. The mechanics are the same as Rogers Roam Like Home, Bell Roam Better or AT&T International Day Pass:
- You pay per day you use it. The charge triggers when your phone sends or receives data, a text or a call abroad. Days you keep the phone on Wi-Fi only usually cost nothing.
- There's a daily data allowance taken from your Canadian plan. Go past it and speeds are typically reduced for the rest of the day.
- Rates change by zone. The US is usually billed at one rate, the rest of the world at another.
- Some plans include it outright, especially higher-tier ones.
We won't quote a price here, because Telus changes rates by plan, zone and promo. Open the My Telus app or telus.com and read the exact daily rate attached to your line. That number is the only one that matters for your trip.
When Telus roaming is the better choice

- Short hops. One or two days in Seattle or New York. A couple of day charges is less hassle than anything else.
- Your plan already includes roaming. If the daily fee is bundled into your rate plan, you've already paid for it.
- You need your Canadian number live. SMS one-time codes from a bank, calls from work, a number that must ring. Easy Roam keeps voice and SMS on your number; a data-only eSIM does not.
- You barely use data. Maps for ten minutes a day and nothing else.

Checklist before you fly (if you're using Easy Roam anyway)
- Confirm the feature is on your line. Roaming is often blocked by default on newer accounts. Enable it in My Telus before you leave Canadian soil.
- Read the daily rate for your destination zone. Screenshot it.
- Check the daily data allowance and what happens after it — reduced speed, extra charge, or a hard stop.
- Set a spend alert if your account offers one.
- Turn off background app refresh and auto photo backup. This is what quietly eats a daily allowance.
- Download offline maps for your city before you go.
- Know the multi-line rule. Family plans often charge each line separately.
- On a cruise? Ship satellite roaming is billed separately and is not part of a normal day pass. Never connect at sea without checking.

Setup, compatibility and the one rule about validity

The rule that matters: your days start counting at the eSIM's first connection to a network at the destination — not at purchase. So install it, then leave the eSIM line switched off until you land. On Android, don't enable the eSIM's mobile data before the trip.
Compatibility: iPhone XR or newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, and most phones from 2020 on. Universal check: dial *#06# — if an EID appears, your phone supports eSIM. A carrier-locked phone must be unlocked first; Telus unlocks on request. We don't sell physical SIM cards.
Note on coverage: VoaSim reaches 170 destinations but does not currently cover the island Caribbean (Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica, Bahamas, Aruba, Curaçao). Puerto Rico works on US networks.
