Turkey is one of those destinations where UK roaming rules get confusing. It is not in the EU, and it is not always in the same roaming bucket as Spain or France, so your EE allowance may not travel with you the way you expect.

What to check in your EE plan before flying to Turkey
EE rates and inclusions change by plan and by country, so the only reliable source is your own account. Do this before you leave the UK:
- Open the EE app or your online account and look up Turkey specifically, not "Europe".
- Check whether roaming there is included, sold as a daily pass, or billed per megabyte.
- Check the daily data allowance if there is one, and what happens when you pass it — many carrier passes slow you down or start charging extra.
- Confirm roaming is switched on in your account if you plan to use it. Some plans need it enabled in advance.

Coverage in Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast

How to avoid accidental EE roaming charges
The classic mistake is landing in Istanbul with the eSIM installed and the EE line still roaming in the background. Five minutes of settings prevents it.
- Install the VoaSim eSIM at home, on Wi-Fi, using the QR code that arrives by email. Do not switch its data on yet.
- Before boarding, go to your phone's mobile data settings and turn off data roaming on your EE line.
- On landing, enable the VoaSim line and set it as your mobile data line.
- Leave the EE line active for calls and SMS if you want, but keep its data roaming off.
- Check that automatic downloads and cloud backup are on Wi-Fi only.

When EE is the better choice
We would rather be honest than push a product that does not fit.
- Very short trips. Two nights in Istanbul with light usage may cost less on an EE daily pass than the 5-day eSIM package.
- You need your UK number on data services. Some banking apps verify by SMS over data or expect your home line online.
- Older phone. eSIM needs iPhone XR or newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 or newer, Pixel 3 or newer, or most phones from 2020 on. Dial *#06# — if an EID appears, you are fine. Carrier-locked handsets must be unlocked first.
- Hotspot is essential. Tethering depends on the plan, so ask support before you rely on it.
