Three roaming in Europe: use it or get an eSIM?

Watch for three things in particular: destinations outside the standard EU list (Switzerland, Turkey, Norway and Iceland are often treated differently), a data allowance expressed per day, and any speed reduction once you hit it. If your trip is short, light on data and fully inside the included list, Three roaming may be all you need — and you keep your number active for calls and texts.

How to avoid accidental roaming charges on Three

The classic mistake is installing a travel eSIM and leaving your Three line's data roaming switched on. The phone can then fall back to your carrier without you noticing.

1. Before the flight, install the VoaSim eSIM at home and leave that line switched off.
2. In settings, set your Three line to voice and SMS only and turn off its data roaming.
3. On landing, switch on the eSIM line and set it as the mobile data line.
4. On Android, do not enable the eSIM's data before the trip — the validity clock starts on first connection abroad.
5. Keep Wi-Fi calling in mind for calls on your Three number when you're on Wi-Fi.

If you'd rather stay on Three roaming, do the opposite check: confirm the add-on is active before departure, since several roaming options must be enabled in advance.
