How Verizon roaming in Europe works
Verizon's international options for Europe are built around TravelPass: you pay for each day you actually use your phone abroad, and the charge posts to your Verizon bill. Some Verizon plans include a set number of TravelPass days or an international allowance; others do not. Each day usually comes with a data allowance, and once you pass it, speeds are reduced for the rest of that day.

The big upside of TravelPass is simplicity: your number, your calls, your texts, no new profile to install. The downside is arithmetic. How to avoid surprise roaming charges
The classic bad surprise is the phone connecting to a European network on its own while you sleep. Two minutes of settings prevent it.
- Install the VoaSim eSIM at home, before you fly, and leave the eSIM line switched off until you land.
- In your phone settings, turn data roaming off for the Verizon line. Keep the line on if you still want calls and texts on your number.
- After landing, switch on the eSIM line and set it as the data line. Data roaming must be ON for the eSIM line only.
- Check the My Verizon app before departure to confirm no international day pass is auto-triggered by your plan.
- WhatsApp, iMessage and app calls run over the eSIM data on your same number.

Does your phone support an eSIM?
Most Verizon phones sold since 2020 do. That includes iPhone XR or newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 or newer and Google Pixel 3 or newer. US iPhone 14 and later have no SIM tray at all, which means eSIM only.
Universal check: dial *#06#. If an EID number appears, your phone handles eSIM. The other requirement is that the device must be carrier-unlocked. Verizon unlocks most devices automatically after a set period; if yours is still locked, contact Verizon before you travel.

When Verizon is still the better choice

- You need a real phone number abroad. VoaSim is data only: no voice minutes, no SMS line. If a bank or a hotel must reach you by voice call or text, keep your Verizon line active.
- Very short trips with light use. One or two days of TravelPass can beat a 5-day package.
- Your plan already includes international days or data. Some Verizon plans bundle them; check before paying twice.
- Hotspot is essential. We do not promise tethering on our plans. Ask support first if you plan to work from a laptop all day.
- Cruises. A travel eSIM works on land at European ports, not at sea. Ship packages or carrier maritime rates are the only option mid-ocean.
