How to install an eSIM step by step

Installing an eSIM takes 5 minutes and is done at home, on Wi-Fi, before the trip. The process is: scan the QR → name the line → leave it set for the destination. Step by step per system:

iPhone

  1. Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code
  2. Scan the QR (from another screen or printed). On iOS 17+, if the QR is on the same iPhone, long-press it and choose "Add eSIM"
  3. Name the line: "Travel"
  4. Under "Default line" keep your usual number; switch cellular data when you travel (or set the eSIM now)
  5. On the Travel line, turn on Data Roaming. At home it'll show "no service": that's normal

Android (Samsung / Xiaomi / Motorola / Pixel)

  1. Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM · Xiaomi: SIM cards & mobile networks → Add eSIM · Motorola/Pixel: Network & internet → SIMs → Download a SIM
  2. Scan the QR and confirm the line download
  3. Rename it "Travel" and enable it
  4. Turn on data roaming for that line (on Xiaomi: International roaming set to "Always")
  5. When you travel, select it as your mobile data line

The pre-boarding checklist

  1. "Travel" line installed and enabled ✓
  2. Data roaming on the eSIM turned ON ✓
  3. Roaming on your home line turned OFF ✓ (avoids charges)
  4. After landing: eSIM as mobile data, and browse away

Frequently asked questions

When should I install the eSIM?
Ideally 1-3 days before the trip, at home and on Wi-Fi. Never leave it for the airport.
Does installing it use up plan days?
No. The plan starts counting when the eSIM connects to a network at the destination, not at installation.
What if the QR scan gives an error?
It's almost always fixed by installing manually with the SM-DP+ code. Full guide: "eSIM QR code not working" in our Rescue hub.
