Does a travel eSIM work for calls?
Travel eSIMs are data-only: they don't come with their own phone number. So how do you call? The way you already do: WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram — which work perfectly over the eSIM's internet, free, in any country.
What you CAN do with a data eSIM
- Voice and video calls via WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Messenger
- Receive bank SMS — they arrive on your usual SIM, which stays active
- Call landlines/local numbers with VoIP apps (Skype, Google Voice) for cents per minute
What it does NOT do
- It has no number of its own: it doesn't receive calls or SMS addressed to "its" line
- It won't work for apps that require verifying a local number at the destination (rare for tourism)
Do I need a local number at the destination?
For tourism, almost never: restaurants, tours and even official services accept WhatsApp. Ride apps (Uber, Bolt, Grab, Cabify) work with your existing account, no local number needed.

How does my family call me during the trip?
Via WhatsApp or FaceTime, same as always — your number doesn't change and the eSIM provides the internet. Conventional calls to your number come in via roaming (answering can cost; better to call back on WhatsApp).
Can I receive my bank's SMS code?
Yes: it arrives on your usual SIM, which stays active with data roaming off. Receiving SMS usually costs nothing.
