Phone showing only SOS abroad?

Direct answer"SOS" (iPhone) or "Emergency calls only" (Android) means the phone sees local networks, but none of your lines managed to register. With a travel eSIM, most cases are fixed with: eSIM line turned on + data roaming on + manual network selection.

Get the network back in this order

  1. Confirm the eSIM line is turned on (switch enabled in cellular/SIM settings)
  2. Data roaming on for the eSIM line
  3. Airplane mode 10 seconds → off → wait 1-2 minutes
  4. Restart the phone
  5. Manual selection: pick a local carrier; if it fails, try ANOTHER from the list (not every network accepts every eSIM)

Why does SOS show up?

The phone always shows SOS when it sees towers but has no registration permission on any of them. It’s common right after landing, before the eSIM negotiates with the partner network — and it almost always resolves with the steps above, without changing anything in the plan.

Still at home? "No service" is normal

Most travel eSIMs only connect in the destination country. At home it shows "no service" and that is not a defect. Installing it doesn't use up the plan: the days usually start counting when you connect at the destination with roaming turned on.

⚠️ Never delete the eSIM from your phone. With most providers the QR code installs only once: deleting the line can mean losing the plan. Removing the eSIM is a last resort, and only with guidance from the support team of whoever sold it to you.

Frequently asked questions

Does SOS drain battery or generate any charge?
It charges nothing. It only means that, at that moment, only emergency calls are available.
I tried everything and it’s still on SOS. What else could it be?
It could be a plan not activated, a destination outside coverage or an eSIM for another region. Send a screenshot to the tool and the AI checks it with you — works with any company’s eSIM.
