eSIM with no 5G abroad: is it normal?
Direct answerIt depends on the destination: in many countries 5G isn’t yet enabled for roaming lines — the eSIM connecting on 4G/LTE is the expected behavior and browses just fine. Stuck on 3G/E is abnormal: force LTE in the line’s options or switch carriers via manual selection.

Force the best network type
- iPhone: Settings → Cellular → (eSIM) → Voice & Data → pick 5G Auto or LTE
- Android: in the eSIM line’s options → Preferred network type → 5G/LTE
Stuck on 3G or E?
- Switch local carriers via manual network selection — the partner with 4G/5G may be another one
- Airplane mode 10 s to renegotiate the connection
- On the move (train/highway), bouncing between generations is normal
Does 5G really matter on a trip?
For maps, translation, social media and video, LTE is plenty. 5G’s practical difference shows up in heavy downloads — not worth switching plans over.
Frequently asked questions
My plan says "5G" but I only get LTE. Was I scammed?
Not necessarily: "5G" in plans means "uses 5G where the local network enables it for roaming". In several countries that enablement doesn’t exist yet.
