EE international roaming: how it works, what to check, and when a travel eSIM wins
Key facts
- EE roaming is billed per day of use or bundled in your plan, usually with a daily data allowance and reduced speeds after it — check the current rate in the EE app.
- For 1-2 day trips or light use on a plan that includes roaming, staying on EE is the simpler choice.
- VoaSim charges one price per duration for all 170 destinations: USD 23.90 for 7 days, USD 30.90 for 10 days, USD 42.90 for 15 days.
- Keep your EE SIM active for your UK number and just switch off its data roaming; the eSIM handles all data.
- Days start counting at the eSIM's first connection abroad, so install before you fly and keep the line off until landing.

If you're an EE customer packing for a trip, the question is simple: do you switch on roaming and pay EE, or install a travel eSIM and leave your UK line for calls and texts only? Both work. The right answer depends on how long you're away and how much data you actually burn.
This page explains the carrier roaming model in plain terms, gives you a pre-flight checklist, and shows the exact VoaSim price so you can compare with real numbers.
How EE international roaming is billed
Carrier roaming generally works in one of two ways, and EE is no exception:
- Included in your plan. Some EE plans bundle roaming in a set list of destinations, usually with a data allowance per day or per trip.
- Daily charge. In other plans or outside the included zones, you pay a fee for each day you use data abroad, which unlocks part of your UK allowance.
Two details matter more than the headline. First, there is normally a daily data cap: once you pass it, speeds drop sharply or data stops until the next day. Second, roaming often has to be switched on in your account or the EE app before you travel, and some plans need a roaming add-on for destinations outside Europe.
Rates and included zones change by country and by plan, and they change over time. We don't quote them here on purpose: check the current figure in your EE app or on ee.co.uk before you leave. That's the only number you can trust for your line.
Checklist before you fly with EE roaming
If you decide to stay on EE, run through this the day before departure, while you still have UK signal and support hours:
- Open the EE app and confirm your destination is covered and what the daily charge or allowance is.
- Enable roaming on your account if it isn't on by default, and add any pack your plan requires.
- Check whether there is a spend cap on your line and set one you're comfortable with.
- Note the daily data allowance and what happens after it: reduced speed or a hard stop.
- Download maps, boarding passes and playlists offline so day one doesn't eat your allowance.
- Turn off background app refresh and automatic cloud photo backup.
Do the same check for every country on your itinerary. A multi-country trip can mix included and non-included destinations, and that's where bills go wrong. If you'd rather not think about zones at all, compare the flat option in our roaming guide.
When EE roaming is genuinely the better pick
We're not going to pretend the carrier always loses. Stay on EE when:
- The trip is 1-2 days. A weekend in Dublin or a day trip to Paris rarely justifies buying a separate data plan.
- Roaming is already included in your plan for that destination and you're a light user: messaging, a few maps, no streaming.
- You need your UK number live on mobile data for two-factor SMS or work calls and don't want to manage two lines.
- You're at sea. A travel eSIM connects to local networks on land only, so a cruise between ports is carrier territory.
Where carrier roaming starts to hurt is the long trip, the heavy-data trip, or the multi-country trip with mixed zones. Two weeks of daily charges, or a daily cap you hit by lunchtime, is when a flat-price eSIM becomes the cheaper and calmer option. See how the two models stack up in our comparison hub.

Trips of 1-4 days pay the 5-day package. A second eSIM in the same order gets 10% extra off. Maximum 90 days per eSIM. Payment is by international credit or debit card in USD through Stripe, with an invoice by email. Our Europe plan covers 50 countries with one eSIM, including the UK, Switzerland, Turkey, Norway and Iceland. Run the simulator with your dates for the exact figure.
Using a travel eSIM alongside your EE line
You don't have to choose between your UK number and cheap data. Keep both:
- Your physical EE SIM stays in the phone. Calls and SMS to your UK number still arrive, and WhatsApp stays on that number.
- Turn off data roaming on the EE line. That's the switch that generates charges.
- Set the VoaSim eSIM as your mobile data line. Maps, WhatsApp calls, streaming and rideshare apps all run over it.
Install before you fly. The QR code arrives by email within minutes of purchase, and we have step-by-step guides for iPhone and Android. Your days only start counting at the eSIM's first connection to a network at the destination, so install at home and keep the eSIM line switched off until you land. On Android, don't turn on the eSIM's data before the trip.
Compatibility: iPhone XR or newer, Galaxy S20 or newer, Pixel 3 or newer, and most phones from 2020 on. Dial *#06# — if an EID appears, you have eSIM. Carrier-locked handsets must be unlocked first.
If something goes wrong
No signal after landing is almost always a settings issue, not a dead eSIM. Our free eSIM Rescue tool diagnoses an eSIM of any brand, including ones you didn't buy from us, and walks you through APN, line selection and network search.
Behind it there's human support by chat and at hola@voasim.com, plus an optional WhatsApp contact at checkout. If the eSIM will not connect and support can't fix it, you get a 100% refund.
Two honest limits worth knowing before you buy. We currently have no coverage in the island Caribbean (Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica, Bahamas, Aruba, Curaçao); Puerto Rico works because it runs on US networks. And hotspot/tethering depends on the plan — ask support before you rely on it for a laptop. More on how we operate on our trust page.
Why trust VoaSim?
Registered company with an invoice on every purchase, USD payment via Stripe with no hidden fees, human support and a guarantee: if the eSIM will not connect and support cannot fix it, you get 100% back.
