O2 international roaming: how it works, what to check, and when a travel eSIM wins

You are an O2 customer, you fly soon, and you want to know what your data will cost. The honest answer: it depends on your plan, your destination and the day you travel, so the only reliable source is O2's own site or app.

What this page does is explain the roaming model in plain terms, give you a pre-flight checklist, and show exactly when a travel eSIM is the cheaper, simpler choice.

How carrier roaming is billed (the model, not the rate)

UK carriers, O2 included, generally use one of three models abroad:

• Included roaming: certain destinations are bundled into your plan, so you use your normal UK allowance with no extra charge.
• Per-day charge: you pay a fixed amount for each day you actually use data abroad, and that day unlocks a set allowance from your UK plan.
• Roaming bundles or out-of-bundle rates: for destinations outside the above, you buy an add-on or pay per megabyte, which is where bills get painful.

Two details catch people out. First, many plans have a daily data allowance — pass it and speeds drop or extra charges start. Second, roaming often has to be switched on before you travel, in the app or in your account settings. Rates and country lists change, so check the O2 app on the week you fly. Never rely on a number you read on a blog, including this one.

When O2 roaming is genuinely the better pick

Carrier roaming is not the enemy. There are clear cases where it beats buying anything extra:

• Short hops of 1-2 days. A quick trip to Dublin or Paris with light use can cost less than any travel plan.
• Your plan already includes the destination. If roaming is bundled for where you are going, you pay nothing extra. Use it.
• You need your UK number live. Calls and SMS to your O2 number keep working while you roam. A data-only eSIM does not replace that.
• Light usage. Maps for ten minutes a day and a few WhatsApp messages rarely stress a daily allowance.

Pre-flight checklist if you stay on O2 roaming

1. Open the O2 app and confirm the current rate and inclusions for your exact destination, on your exact tariff.
2. Check whether roaming needs to be enabled on your account, and do it days before departure, not at the gate.
3. Note your daily data allowance and what happens when you hit it: reduced speed or extra charges.
4. Check if there is a spend cap on your account and set one if you can.
5. Ask about tethering rules abroad — they can differ from home.
6. Turn off automatic backups and app updates over mobile data.
7. Download offline maps and boarding passes before you leave Wi-Fi.
8. Save the O2 customer service number for use from abroad.

Do this once and you avoid the two classic bill shocks: roaming in a country you assumed was included, and a phone that quietly uploaded 4 GB of photos overnight.

This is the setup most travellers end up with, and it is the point people miss. An eSIM does not remove your physical SIM. Your O2 line stays in the phone, your UK number stays live, and WhatsApp still runs on that number.
