Telstra international roaming: how it works, what to check, and when a travel eSIM wins

If you're a Telstra customer packing for an overseas trip, you have two clean options: switch on the carrier's international roaming, or install a travel eSIM before you fly. Both work. Which one is cheaper depends on how long you're away and how much data you actually burn.

How Telstra international roaming works

Telstra's international roaming lets your Australian number keep working overseas on partner networks. The billing model is the part people miss:

• Per day of use, or bundled. Depending on your plan, roaming is either charged as a day pass triggered the moment you use data, calls or texts abroad, or it's already included as a roaming inclusion on certain postpaid plans.
• Daily data allowance. Each day of roaming typically comes with a set amount of data. Once you go past it, you either buy more or continue at reduced speed.
• Country zones. Rates and inclusions differ by destination. The same trip can cost very differently in New Zealand versus somewhere less common.
• Activation. Roaming usually has to be switched on before you leave, from the My Telstra app or by contacting Telstra.

When Telstra roaming is actually the better choice

Checklist before you roam with Telstra

If you decide to roam, do this a few days before departure, not at the gate:

1. Open the My Telstra app and confirm international roaming is enabled on your service.
2. Check the rate or inclusion for your exact destination, plus the daily data allowance.
3. Note what happens after the allowance: extra charge, reduced speed, or both.
4. Set up spend alerts or a roaming spend limit if your account offers them.
5. Turn off automatic app updates, cloud photo backup and background video. These eat a daily allowance in minutes.
6. Check whether tethering is allowed while roaming if you plan to work off a laptop.
7. Download offline maps for your city before you fly.
