Mexico is the one country where AT&T roaming is often already handled: several AT&T plans treat Mexico as part of your home zone. But not every plan does, and some include Mexico with a data allowance that slows down once you pass it. That is where travelers get burned.

Check your AT&T plan before you decide anything
Do this before you buy anything. It takes a minute and it decides the whole trip.
- Open the myAT&T app and find your plan's international section.
- Look for Mexico specifically. Some plans bundle Mexico and Canada with your domestic data; others treat Mexico as international and bill an International Day Pass style charge per day of use.
- If Mexico is included, look for the high-speed data allowance and what happens after it. Reduced speed after a threshold is common.
- Check whether roaming must be enabled before you leave the US.

How to avoid an accidental roaming bill
The worst outcome is paying twice — an eSIM plus a roaming charge triggered the second you landed. Prevent it:
- Install the VoaSim eSIM at home, before boarding, while you have good Wi-Fi.
- Keep the eSIM line switched off until you land in Mexico. On Android, do not turn on the eSIM's mobile data before the trip. Your plan's days start counting at the first connection to a network in Mexico.
- On landing, turn data roaming off for your AT&T line and set the VoaSim eSIM as your data line.
- Leave the AT&T line active for calls and SMS if you want — just keep its data roaming off.

Coverage in Mexico: Cancún, CDMX, Tulum and the gaps

Does your phone support an eSIM?
