Truly unlimited travel eSIM with no throttling and no daily cap: how to tell

The word "unlimited" does a lot of heavy lifting in the travel eSIM market. Some plans are unlimited until a daily allowance runs out, then crawl. Others are unlimited until a "fair use" paragraph in the terms says otherwise. A few really have no cap at all.

The three kinds of "unlimited" you will meet

Almost every "unlimited" eSIM on sale falls into one of three buckets:

1. Daily cap, then throttling. You get a set amount of full-speed data each day. After that the line still works, but at a speed closer to dial-up. Video stops, maps limp. This is the most common design, and it is also how most carrier roaming day passes behave.
2. Unlimited with a fair-use clause. No number on the sales page, but the terms reserve the right to slow down or suspend heavy users. You only discover the threshold when you hit it.
3. No cap, no throttling, no fair-use clause. The terms say nothing about slowing you down because there is nothing to slow. This is what VoaSim sells.

None of these is dishonest by default. A daily-cap plan can be perfectly fine if you check email and use maps. The problem is buying one while believing you bought the third kind.

How to read the terms in two minutes

Open the provider's terms or FAQ page and use your browser's search function. Look for these words:

• "fair use" or "acceptable use" — if it appears next to data, there is a threshold somewhere.
• "reduced speed", "throttle", "deprioritize" — tells you what happens after the threshold.
• "per day" next to a GB number — that is a daily cap, not unlimited.
• "tethering" or "hotspot" — most unlimited plans restrict or forbid it. Honest providers say so up front.
• "validity" — when the clock starts: at purchase, at activation, or at first connection abroad.

When another option is the better pick

Unlimited is not automatically the right buy. Be fair with yourself about how you travel.

• You use very little data. Airalo, Nomad, Ubigi, Saily, Alosim and others sell by the GB through their apps. A 1 GB package for a short trip can cost less than any unlimited plan. Check their sites for current pricing.
• You need a hotspot for a laptop or a group. VoaSim does not allow tethering. Look at providers whose terms explicitly permit it, or buy one eSIM per person.
• You need a local phone number for SMS codes. A local physical SIM gives you one, at the cost of a shop visit, passport registration in most countries and swapping out your own SIM.

Install it right so the days do not burn early

The validity clock starts at the eSIM's first connection to a network at your destination — not at purchase and not at install. So keep the eSIM line switched off until you land. On Android in particular, do not turn on the eSIM's mobile data before the trip.

Your physical SIM and your number stay in the phone, so WhatsApp keeps running on your usual number. Just turn off your home carrier's data roaming so it does not bill you in the background.
