eSIM not connecting on your iPhone? Here’s the fix

Direct answerOn the iPhone, the #1 cause of an eSIM with no internet is Data Roaming turned off on the eSIM line. Go to Settings → Cellular, tap the eSIM line (not your home line) and turn on Data Roaming. Then confirm in Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data that the selected line is the eSIM.

1. Turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM

2. Set the eSIM as your data line

Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → pick the eSIM line (not your home line). Your home line (Verizon, AT&T, Vodafone, EE...) stays active for SMS only — with its roaming turned off, so there are no bill surprises.

3. Confirm the line is turned on

In Settings → Cellular, tap the eSIM line and check that "Turn On This Line" is enabled.

4. Force a network search

  1. Airplane mode for 10 seconds, then off
  2. Restart the iPhone
  3. Still nothing? Settings → Cellular → (eSIM) → Network Selection → turn off "Automatic" and pick a local carrier

Still at home? "No service" is normal

Most travel eSIMs only connect in the destination country. At home it shows "no service" and that is not a defect. Installing it doesn't use up the plan: the days usually start counting when you connect at the destination with roaming turned on.

⚠️ Never delete the eSIM from your phone. With most providers the QR code installs only once: deleting the line can mean losing the plan. Removing the eSIM is a last resort, and only with guidance from the support team of whoever sold it to you.

Frequently asked questions

Won’t turning on roaming for the eSIM generate charges?
No. A travel eSIM is designed to work in roaming on the destination’s local networks: the plan already covers it. The line that must NOT have roaming on is your home line.
Is my iPhone eSIM compatible?
iPhone XR, XS and every model released since 2018 have eSIM. iPhones bought in mainland China and some from Hong Kong/Macau are the exception.
The eSIM disappeared from my list of lines. Now what?
If the line was deleted, most providers’ QR codes cannot be installed again. Talk to the support of whoever sold it to you before anything else.
