Phone locked by your carrier: how to unlock it
A locked phone only accepts SIMs from the carrier you bought it from — and that includes travel eSIMs. The good news: unlocking is usually free and can be requested from the app.
1-minute test: is it locked?
- iPhone: Settings → General → About → "Carrier Lock". "No SIM restrictions" = unlocked.
- Android: the safest way is trying a SIM from another carrier. If it registers on the network, it is unlocked.
- If you bought the phone unlocked in a store (no plan), it is almost certainly not locked.
How to request the unlock
- Open your carrier's app or website and search for "unlock" or "device unlock".
- In most countries the unlock is free and mandatory by regulation once the device is paid off or the contract term is met.
- Have your IMEI ready: dial *#06# on the phone.
- The process takes minutes to 48 h. Request it days before the trip, not at the airport.
After unlocking
Restart the phone, install the eSIM on Wi-Fi and leave everything ready the night before the flight. The full checklist is here.
