Travel eSIM or your carrier's roaming?

Your carrier's roaming (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Vodafone, EE...) is convenient: nothing to install. But convenience has a price — and the surprise-bill risk is real. The math:

The comparison

Travel eSIMCarrier roaming
PricePrepaid, fixed (VoaSim from USD 1.59/day)Daily passes that often cost 2-5x more per day
DataUnlimited (VoaSim)Small GB buckets or "unlimited" with speed caps
Surprise-bill riskZero: your home line travels with roaming offHigh if the pass isn't properly active (per-MB billing)
Installation5 minutes, via QR, before the tripNothing to install (activate before boarding)
Your numberStays active for SMS and WhatsAppStays the same

The risk nobody mentions

If the roaming pass isn't properly set up and you browse anyway, many carriers bill per MB — there are bills of hundreds of dollars for one day of maps and photos. With a travel eSIM that risk doesn't exist: your home line travels with roaming off and the internet comes from a prepaid line.

When carrier roaming makes sense

Trips of 1-2 days, or if your plan already includes free roaming in the destination country (some premium plans do). For everything else, the eSIM wins the math.

Frequently asked questions

Do I lose my number using a travel eSIM?
No. Your usual SIM stays in the phone, active for SMS (with roaming off). WhatsApp stays on your number, browsing through the eSIM.
What if my roaming pass is active but not working?
The logic is the inverse of the eSIM: roaming on YOUR line must be ON. See our Rescue guide: "Carrier roaming not working abroad".
