How many GB does WhatsApp use abroad?
Text barely uses anything (a few KB per message). What consumes data is everything else: photos landing in the family group, voice notes, and above all video calls — half an hour of video with the family is 300-500 MB.

- WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download → under "When using mobile data", untick photos, audio and video (download them yourself when you want)
- Turn on "Use less data for calls" on the same screen
- Mute noisy groups and let their media download on Wi-Fi only
