How many GB does WhatsApp use abroad?

Text barely uses anything (a few KB per message). What consumes data is everything else: photos landing in the family group, voice notes, and above all video calls — half an hour of video with the family is 300-500 MB.

Consumption by usage type

UsageConsumption
Text messages (whole day)1-5 MB
Voice notes (30 min total)10-20 MB
Voice call (30 min)15-30 MB
Video call (30 min)300-500 MB
Photos sent/received (30 photos)30-90 MB
Family-group videos (10 videos)100-500 MB

Set it up before the trip (2 minutes)

  1. WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download → under "When using mobile data", untick photos, audio and video (download them yourself when you want)
  2. Turn on "Use less data for calls" on the same screen
  3. Mute noisy groups and let their media download on Wi-Fi only

The classic myth

You don't lose your WhatsApp by using an eSIM. The app stays on your usual number and browses through the eSIM's internet. Nothing to reconfigure, no "number change".

With unlimited, the video call with your family has no counter. See your price:

Frequently asked questions

Does WhatsApp work with a data-only eSIM?
Yes. WhatsApp is tied to your usual number, not to the SIM providing internet. It works normally through the eSIM.
How much does a 1-hour video call use?
Between 600 MB and 1 GB, depending on quality. It's WhatsApp's biggest data consumer by far.
